Clutter is not only unsightly in a home, but it can play host to dust, dirt and germs and make cleaning a much harder and lengthier process than it needs to be. While having a few precious items dotted around your home is nice, when these items begin to fill every available inch of space, it might be time to think about getting rid of some of them.
To help you eliminate as much clutter as possible, here are a few helpful tips:
Have items passed their expiry date?
While this can be applied in the literal sense to food items, it can also be applied to other things you have in your home that you might no longer have a use for. If something hasn’t been used for weeks or months, then ask yourself whether it’s likely to be used. If the answer is no, either toss it in the trash or give it away. Of course, if something has a monetary value, you can try selling it online or in a yard sale.
Do you need it?
There will be many things in your home that you need to hang onto; they have a purpose and you need them. But there will be many things that you don’t need, and if they don’t even look pretty, should you hold onto them and watch as they gather dust and make the place look untidy?
Do you love it that much?
A barren home with no items that show your personality or reflect what you love, may not be described as a home, and if you love something and it makes you feel happy when you look at it, then throwing it away might be counter intuitive. However, if you’re honest with yourself about certain items in your home, you’ll find it much easier to eliminate clutter and reduce your home to one that contains a few items that you truly love.
Do you have more than one of this item?
Duplicate clutter is doubly difficult to clean and can make your home look doubly untidy. If you have more than one of something but only need one, then it makes sense to get rid of the other. One important thing to keep in mind when eliminating clutter, is that if you already use the services of a professional house cleaner or are thinking about using one, the less clutter you have, the easier their job will be, and the less time they’ll need to spend in your home.
De-cluttering can be tough on your emotions but remember that unless you have a strong and positive emotional connection with something, it probably doesn’t need to be in your home.
Make cleaning easier by getting rid of as much clutter as you can, and you’ll find that your mental health feels better, too. If clutter isn’t an issue, but your home is still a mess, then simply call in the house cleaning professionals and have them get you shipshape in next to no time.
