Fridges fail slowly. The compartment drifts a degree warmer, the motor runs a little longer each cycle, a seal loses its grip in one corner, and none of it registers until milk turns early or the freezer starts frosting over. Recognising which symptom belongs to which component is what turns a vague sense that something is wrong into a useful call, and it determines whether fridge repair means a part or a decision about replacement.
Warm Compartment, Cold Freezer
When the fresh food section is warm while the freezer stays cold, the fault usually sits in the airflow between them rather than in the cooling system. Most modern refrigerators cool both compartments from a single evaporator in the freezer and move cold air across with a fan. A failed evaporator fan, an iced-over evaporator coil, or a blocked air damper will starve the fresh food section while the freezer continues to work. When neither section holds temperature, the cooling system itself is implicated: a refrigerant leak, a failing compressor, a failed condenser fan or a control fault. Frost and Ice Build-Up

A frost-free refrigerator melts accumulated ice periodically using a heater controlled by a thermostat or timer, and any of those three failing lets ice accumulate until it blocks airflow. A blocked defrost drain produces a related symptom, with meltwater refreezing at the base or running out into the fresh food compartment and pooling under the crisper drawers.
Water Under the Drawers or on the Floor
Water inside the compartment usually traces to that blocked defrost drain. Water on the floor points to the drain overflowing, a cracked drain pan, or a leaking connection where a model has a plumbed water dispenser or ice maker. It is worth attending to promptly for two reasons: the appliance is electrical, and a slow leak beneath a kitchen unit damages cabinetry and flooring for months before anyone sees standing water.
The Door Is Doing More Than You Think
Seals perish, particularly at the hinge side, and a gasket that no longer grips lets warm humid air in continuously. The consequences are a compressor that runs constantly, condensation inside, ice build-up and higher electricity consumption. Test it by closing the door on a strip of paper and pulling: firm resistance all round is what you want, and a section that slides out easily has failed. Gaskets are replaceable and inexpensive, and a misaligned door can sometimes simply be adjusted.
Noises Worth Reporting
Some sounds are normal: gurgling refrigerant, clicking thermostats, the occasional crack of expansion. What matters is change. A rattle or buzz that has grown louder usually indicates a fan, sometimes only because dust has unbalanced the blade. A rhythmic ticking with no cooling can indicate a compressor attempting to start and failing on its relay or overload. Tripping the Breaker
An appliance that trips a residual current device or circuit breaker is reporting a current leak somewhere, most often in a defrost heater or a motor winding. Reducing the Chance of the Next Fault
Clean the condenser coils twice a year, keep clearance around the appliance so heat can escape, check the door seal periodically, avoid packing food against internal vents, and let hot dishes cool before refrigerating.
